Festus
Night brings out stars as sorrow shows us truths.
PHILIP JAMES BAILEY
Festus
We should count time by heart-throbs. He most lives,
Who thinks most, feels noblest, acts the best
PHILIP JAMES BAILEY
Festus
He is a fool who is not for love and beauty.
PHILIP JAMES BAILEY
Festus
Men might be better if we better deemed
Of them. The worst way to improve the world
Is to condemn it.
PHILIP JAMES BAILEY
Festus
A double error sometimes sets us right.
PHILIP JAMES BAILEY
Festus
Every believer is God's miracle.
PHILIP JAMES BAILEY
Festus
Lowliness is the base of every virtue,
And he who goes the lowest builds the safest.
PHILIP JAMES BAILEY
Festus
And the Temple again shall be built,
And filled as it was of yore;
And the burden be lift from the heart of the world,
And the nations all adore;
Prayers to the throne of Heaven
Morning and eve shall rise,
And unto and not of the Lamb
Shall be the sacrifice.

"The Return", The Angel World And Other Poems
Of all the rivers in the land,
Thee most I love, fair Trent,
For in thy stream and by thy banks
My happiest hours I've spent.
'Twas there, hard by, I first drew breath,
There hope to end my days;
And everywhere I'll tell till death
My native river's praise.
PHILIP JAMES BAILEY
"To the Trent", The Angel World and Other Poems
Evil and good are God's right hand and left.
PHILIP JAMES BAILEY
Festus
From the strength of the storm and the grasp of the sea,
And the lightning's red wrath, Heaven's ransomed are we.

"Autumn", The Angel World and Other Poems
Imagination is the air of mind.
PHILIP JAMES BAILEY
Festus
While over all springs up the green-lifed sod,
And arch, so light and lofty in its span--
So frail and yet so lasting--tis like man.
PHILIP JAMES BAILEY
"A Ruin", The Angel World and Other Poems
Art is man's nature; nature is God's art.
PHILIP JAMES BAILEY
Festus
So sunset hath the richest sky,
So saints look happiest as they die.

"Autumn", The Angel World and Other Poems
Prayer is the spirit speaking truth to Truth.
PHILIP JAMES BAILEY
Festus
Praise Him, ye sceptred saints,
With God, like-minded, glorying in His will,
Impeccable, who muse celestial things;
Whose sins are washed away in seas of love;
Who, liberate from all law, sit judging law;
Whose passion for perfection sated, ye,
Rapt into Deity, with your Lord enjoy
Life unitive, life eternal, life divine;
Who revel in futurity, and inhale
The gust of inspiration at His lips;
Of all worlds owner, author of all fates.
PHILIP JAMES BAILEY
Universal Hymn
Ah, nothing comes to us too soon but sorrow.
PHILIP JAMES BAILEY
Festus
May such a calm triumphant course
To sacred souls be given,
That, river-like, though born on earth,
They image only Heaven.
